Help Bring a Gamelan Master to Emory

Thank you for your interest in supporting the Emory Gamelan Ensemble.  We are currently raising funds to support our ensemble and bring a Gamelan master as an artist-in-residence!

HELP US BRING GAMELAN MASTER TO EMORY

Over the last 4 years, Emory Gamelan Ensemble has relied heavily on the support and leadership of dedicated community members, Emory faculty, and PhD students from various departments with occasional short workshops and long-distance Indonesian master mentorships, as there is no Indonesian ethnomusicologist or a Gamelan master-in-residence.

We wish to bring internationally renowned, Indonesian gamelan musician Darsono as an artist-in-residence for 3-6 weeks for the 2018 Fall Semester and 2019 Spring Semester. Your donation will help us achieve this goal as well as support our upcoming concerts in October 13th and December 8th 2018.

During his residency, the Gamelan Master will:

  • Provide lessons in various advanced gamelan instruments, especially rebab (Javanese string instrument), kendhang (drums) and gender (suspended xylophone) as well as vocal technique.
  • Provide guidance in historical and cultural aspects of performing karawitan in Indonesia and abroad.
  • Lead Emory Gamelan Ensemble in the production of the Gamelan concert held October 13, 2018.
  • Lead Emory Gamelan Ensemble in the production of the Gamelan concert held December 8, 2018.

Why Your Support Matters?

Currently, Emory Gamelan Ensemble is the only active world music ensemble at Emory University.

Gamelan helps musicians grow in technique and style, while also preserving tradition and promoting the diversity of arts and cultures. We are able to interact and make connections with individuals deeply rooted in the culture from which this tradition came.

We are driven to introduce this art to our local community and wider U.S. audience. Beside our regular Emory concerts, we perform around Georgia. High profile performances have included playing at the High Museum of Art, the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, an ecumenical service with the Dalai Lama, as well as at various universities.

Why Now?

We are at a unique junction where a gamelan expert, at the level of Darsono, is available for an extended residency in the U.S., and Emory Gamelan Ensemble is at a critical point in educational leadership, as we need the aid of a master to take our group to the next level of skills and performance.

We need your support to aid us in this rare and exciting opportunity of bringing this Gamelan master’s experience and expertise to Emory and to elevate the quality of our performance for the greater community!
