In the beginning the kendang thumps
Comes swirling patterns of bonang
slenthem and gender entrancing
peking pierces!
While balungan binds,
taps of kempyang, ketuk oscillating reverberating embrace of kenong, kempul
and then…
Gong!

The Emory Gamelan Ensemble is part of Emory University World Music Program. Our aim is to disseminate the beauty and knowledge of gamelan performance arts which include musical concerts, wayang (shadow puppet) shows, and traditional dances. We currently play in the Javanese style.
Classical illustrations in this site are from the 18th C Javanese manuscript, Serat Damar Wulan (MSS Jav 89). It has been fully digitized by the British Library. The Damar Wulan manuscript is fully illustrated, with 153 color illustrations, showing courtly life, pageantry, warfare and the everyday life of Javanese people.
